In the classroom of Mrs Dube, all the children are looking at the boy in front with their teacher. Everyone is very quiet. The boy is looking nowhere but down. He is hugging his satchel to himself very tightly. He looks very frightened. His knees are shaking.

‘Children,’ says Mrs Dube, ‘I’d like you to welcome a new learner at our school, who will be part of this class. I ask you to help him if you can, so that he may quickly feel at home here at this school. His name is Nkoranteng. He is from upcountry in Africa, from a country called Ghana.’
