Scribble, a mutant squirrel born with no tail , changes his life drastically when he agrees to let Drakanica take him to The Mall to be ‘technically enhanced’.
His abandonment happens early in the story at the old disused zoo near the Rhodes Memorial, Cape Town, where his mother Camelia leaves him to the mercies of similarly outcast and rejected mutant animals. His Aunt Thelma bullies her harrowed sister into this drastic action with the best of intentions, trying to save Camelia from imminent murder by her abusive husband, Hugo. But Thelma not-so-secretly blames little Scribble for it all.
He grows up and becomes a survivor at the zoo. He meets and falls in love with Aqua Velvet, a cobalt blue squirrel with long hair growing out of her ears. But their parting upsets and angers Aqua – she sees through his promises and his so-called good intentions. After his arrival at The Mall, his character gradually changes from the youngster who arrives at the Mall displaying every characteristic of a feral little survivor. Manipulative, charming, a street-wise trickster, he has a serious case of entitlement and no gratitude for anything after the first over-awed weeks there. He then becomes the poster child for consumerism and ignores Drakanica’s enhancement project.
However, after Drakanica inadvertently creates a monster from a laundry iron,our hero has to convert his dubious but useful zoo-skills (and a vast amount of flab) to become the hero who eventually conquers the formidable Sheena Orion for his own survival, to the relief of Drakanica and Cogs, finally earning their respect.
After that, he is equipped and supported to take on – if not the world, then at least responsibility for his own happiness and that of Aqua Velvet. But will she have him back? And the tail? Quite forgotten.
Conflict happens between Scribble and:
- Cogs: because Cogs thinks he’s a lazy, badly brought-up and ignorant little (bleep);
- Drakanica: because he appreciates nothing, and never takes advice;
- Sheena because she can’t dominate him unless he undergoes a lobotomy at her little pink Barbie hands.
Here’s the result of all those ‘technicals’:
