The extra dimension makes the Paper style different from the Cut-out style.

The idea of using old or stained paper is also a good way to get away from the constant digital feel. 

 In some samples here from my defunct Dappleshades paper decor range, the paper becomes a 3D sculpture evoking foliage or a cascade of bubbles or stones. I’ve also used it in animation for the wings of a paper moth called ‘Tallulah (a very small love story)’.
