‘ONE ENDEAVOURS TO GIVE SATISFACTION.’

A: What do you value above all else in life?
Q: Being of service and seeing to the safety and comfort of Mr Scribble. And his family of course.

Q: What are you most ashamed of?
A: I regret nothing I have ever done or left undone. Some might say I have a regrettable habit of eaves-dropping but one must intrude with discretion if one is to deliver a good service, mustn’t one?

Q: What is your biggest source of pride and why?
A: That Mr Scribble is still alive. I may have played a small part. Because I am so small and nobody ever notices me. That is my strength, I believe. And my list of contacts. Some would be astonished at a few of the names. But they are safe.

Will there be anything else?

Character sheet: Monty the monkey moth

More on Monty

Monty is Scribble’s former pet, and a quiet presence as Scribble’s mother and aunt go to the Old Zoo to ‘constructively abandon’ him. Monty subsequently reappears in all the right places at the right time, unobtrusively making things happen while maintaining his slightly worried, ‘seen-it-all-unfortunately’ expression.

It is Monty who mentions, while visiting Drakanica in her Mall, that there is another promising project for her at the Old Zoo. Scribble is a friend of the little owl whom Drakanica has successfully re-brained and named Cogs. Monty’s new prospect is very much in need of a tail. He yearns to be the squirrel his father would not be ashamed of, and his girlfriend can admire.

Monty does have much to worry about as Scribble’s fluffy guardian angel. Always in the background somewhere, a quiet presence and unsung hero but a true busybody, this mutant monkey-moth has only one mission. It’s his business to mind Scribble’s business.

He truly lives up to his job description when he alerts Cogs to call Drakanica to the rescue before Sheena begins Scribble’s lobotomy. And it is Monty who completes the capture of Sheena according to Scribble’s cunning plan. Then he assumes the duty of comforting Sheena in her prison by listening to her rather well-performed karaoke singing. But he also falls under her spell… Then again, who can resist Sheena, when she’s crooning away?

So, from being an onlooker from his lampshade in Scribble’s family home, to informing Drakanica about a new project at the Old Zoo – all the way to imprisoning Sheena (and unfortunately being tricked into freeing her again), Monty is Jeeves with wings – unobtrusive, there when needed and loyal to the last.

Everyone should have a monkey-moth like Monty.
